After reviewing papers and documents provided by a professor of history at Florida State University about Lewis G. Clarke, his great-grandson, author Carver Clark Gayton realized that his great-grandfather's story was more than an interesting family folklore. He was convinced that Clarke's achievements within the anti-slavery and human rights movements were of such importance and the entire nation could benefit from them.

Carver Clark Gayton, is the great-grandson of Clarke. He served as director of Affirmative Action Programs at the University of Washington, corporate director of educational relations and training for the Boeing Company, lecturer at the University of Washington-Evans School of Public Administration, and executive director of the Northwest African American Museum. He lives in Seattle.
