Louis Riel, also known as the Father of Manitoba, was a Canadian politician in 1873. While some hail him as a folk hero, others think of him as a traitor to Canada.
Author Carrie Bouvette-Mason, a Canada native, falls into the camp of Riel believers. She now hopes to set the record straight and persuade others to see Riel as the hero she sees with her new historical fiction "My Boy Louis Riel: The Inside Story as Told by a Metis Relative" (published by AuthorHouse).
"Our new citizens and even many old-timers are likely not informed as to why there have been protests by Aboriginal people lately," Bouvette-Mason says. "I have noticed, while looking back, that our struggle has been quite similar to the black people of the South; now lately, it has been revealed to me that there are startling parallels between Louis Riel and Martin Luther King."
"My Boy Louis Riel" follows the life of Riel, detailing his many footsteps leading up to his time as a politician and founder of Manitoba, his participation in the Red River Rebellion and eventual execution.
Bouvette-Mason hopes her honest and entertaining look at Riel's life will help readers understand his contribution to Canadian history and extinguish the idea that he was treasonous.
