In this coming of age roman á clef set in Ohio, protagonist Elijah Rake recalls the fateful day his father suddenly died in a skydiving plane crash when he was only nine years old. Through vivid memories, he recounts the effect of not having a father in his life had on his childhood and family as he comes to accept that death is inevitable. After much reflection and reconciliation, Elijah is able to grow into the man he becomes at the end of the story.
“I wanted to write a ‘literary thriller’ for people who love great stories,” said Kiggans. “But I wanted it to represent real life, because we don’t always get a happy ending in real life. The book has ties to something similar that happened in my family over 50 years ago. Much like Elijah, I was able to create a legendary story from this experience.”
“The Funeral Plain” highlights themes of personal development, life, death, family and relationships as it reminds readers that before death, there is a rich life worth discovering and living.
The book has already entertained and touched readers with one reader calling it “…a nice piece of work. You should be proud…a melancholy delight.” Another wrote, “Just finished reading it cover to cover, could not put it down.”
“The Funeral Plain is an incredibly well written and absorbing novel that so easily captures the reader that it’s hard to believe it’s Mr. Kiggans’ first book. This gentleman is an exceptionally talented writer and I highly recommend this novel.” – Amazon reviewer
