NEW YORK

In "Costly Illusions" (published by iUniverse), author Vesna Grudzinski Sutija's new novel, readers join Alexandra as she fights to change her unhappy life.

After a happy childhood in Croatia, Alexandra tries to adjust to a new life as an immigrant in New York, aspiring to become a journalist. Lonely and perplexed with dating customs, she rushes into a loveless marriage with an older, controlling businessman. Seeking love outside her marriage with a charismatic man, she partially blames herself for his sudden rejection. Over the years Alexandra struggles to retain her identity as woman, wife, mother and a professional, until some lost letters of her former lover force her to reevaluate the past. The confrontation with the truth exerts an effort to overcome this - yet another - obstacle to salvage her identity intact.

An excerpt from "Costly Illusion":

"Should I be proud of just surviving a loss? Isn't there more to life? I realize that it is not regret for a future void, but rage for not been given the opportunity to try, the opportunity to create freely without having to fight stubbornly for a balance. That's I how felt. It was a constant effort to retain an identity."

"It is my hope that readers see that tough days and tough problems of contemporary existence are survivable and one can win the game despite the temporary setbacks," she says.
