CN Times Books today announced the launch of China Threat? The Challenges, Myths and Realities of China's Rise, by Dr. Lionel Vairon. Dr. Vairon is an internationally recognized sinologist, diplomat, scholar and journalist well-known for his expertise on China.

From the long-term threat of nuclear war between the U.S. and China, to the disappearance of the African elephant due to Chinese demand for ivory, to current events including accusations of cyber-attacks and meetings between heads of state, each week brings a new round of critique and denunciation of the risks China poses. Dr. Vairon believes "these critiques are largely based on reaction and that the West should attempt to start a real dialogue with China, rather than treating them as a threat."

While critics raise a certain number of fundamental questions that bear asking about the emerging superpower that is China, the answers are often based on ideological or economic considerations. Dr. Vairon sees these attitudes as a threat to the international community if the West doesn't allow China to become a global power over the next few decades. He challenges Western views in China Threat? through his extensive study and analysis of China that also covers:

  • The history and future of China's economy, politics and culture
  • The China perception and how they feel about the West's treatment
  • What we can expect from China in terms of economic, business and political agendas
  • Impact of China's rise on the post-1945 international order
  • Avoiding misunderstanding and fostering open dialogue as well as trying to build mutual respect and trust

"I hope through this book to provide U.S. audiences with a fresh perspective and insight into how to better understand China's current difficulties in its rise, the reasons behind some of its moves, both domestically and internationally, of Chinese leaders, and other issues," stated Dr. Lionel Vairon, author of China Threat?. "Overall, I hope to help readers understand that stability of China is a key issue for the whole world's stability as well as provide a framework for how the international community can work together for the common good."

"We are pleased to be able to help bring an international perspective on such a timely issue to the forefront of popular culture through Dr. Lionel Vairon's China Threat?" stated Paul Harrington, vice president and associate publisher of CN Times Books. "Our mission is to help bridge Western and Eastern thinking and connect readers across the globe with the top minds and points of view across a myriad of topics, and the launch of this inaugural title in our publishing program is a natural fit."
