As a surgeon who works with people with life-threatening illnesses for many years, Dr. Bernie S. Siegel wants to share his belief that "there is a light in each of us by God's/dog's design and, that we are all a part of the candle parade of light." This belief inspired him to write "Buddy's Candle" (published by Trafford Publishing in June of 2008).

Set for a new marketing campaign, the book tells a story narrated by the father to his 9-year-old son. He explains to his child about his fight with cancer when he was only age 9 and how Buddy, a stray dog that befriended him and also had his own battle with cancer encouraged him through the trying times.

The book approaches death in an interesting way through the experiences of a cancer-ridden young child, his dog that is also sick with cancer and a grown man's amazing reiteration of his story of survival and loss when he was that young child so many years ago.

"As long as we remember to love, our candles will glow with life as will Buddy's candle across the Rainbow Bridge. This is a story both children and adults will find healing, uplifting and inspiring," Siegel says. "In its gentle way, this story will help us to deal with grief and teaches us how to live life fully and accept loss and death with an open heart."
