In her new memoir, "Being the Real Me: Struggles with Depression" (published by AuthorHouse), Brigitte Bertrand shares the story of how a mental illness affected her life and shaped her into the person she is today.
"Being the Real Me" is Bertrand's life story, but the book acutely focuses her struggle with depression. She shares stories of her ups and downs, and how depression impacted her daily life and her relationships with family. Ultimately, Bertrand's story is about recovery and how she was able to regain control of her life.
An excerpt from "Being the Real Me":
"I did not see many friends during that period. Not many people could relate to me or even begin to understand what I was going through. Even my family had a hard time. They truly wanted to help me, but they did not know what to do or what to say. It seemed to me that everything they said was the wrong thing to say to me. That was my perception of things."
Bertrand hopes her book shows readers suffering from depression that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. "When depressed, you believe it is the end of the world and nothing will get better," she says. "I am proof that things can get better when we seek help. You can survive depression and live a happy and healthy life."
