Hypersexual, drunk, stoned, occasionally Catholic, and inadvertently well-intentioned, Hank Fitzpatrick is your typical man-child stumbling his way through and beyond adolescence in the late 1980s.
And so we are introduced to the protagonist of Brian Sweany's Exotic Music of the Belly Dancer.
A deft, subversive portrait of pre-9/11, pre-Facebook era small-town America-and the substance-abusing, intercourse-having, vulnerable, confused almost-adults that inhabit it-Exotic Music of the Belly Dancer is a comedy, yet it's also a tragedy and a love story, too. But above all else, it's an incendiary, empathetic, warts-and-all roman à clef rooted in real life that teenagers will read behind their parents' backs . . . and that said parents might feel compelled to steal from their teens' nightstands for their own bedtime reading.
"This book doesn't idealize young adulthood nor does it seek to glorify the trials and travails of it," says Sweany. "It empathizes. And it describes young love exactly as it is: painfully awkward, graphically gross, and spectacularly awesome."
Darkly funny, emotionally (not to mention sexually) charged, and intimately familiar to anyone who's ever put off 'growing up' for a few years, Exotic Music of the Belly Dancer will-much like Hank's girlfriend, Laura-either break your heart or save your life. Maybe, probably, inevitably, both.
Destined for cult classic status and heralded by early readers as this spring's must-read, Exotic Music of the Belly Dancer looks at:
· The raging hormones, bad decisions, and perpetual inner conflicts that dominate the lives of teenage boys.
· First love, unrequited love, delayed adolescence, and sexual promiscuity.
· Death, drugs, abuse, and the lies that we all tell ourselves to keep our lives from spinning out of control.
· The hidden truth behind every great party: that the world, if given time, will break your heart.
About the Author:
Brian Sweany is the Director of Acquisitions for Recorded Books, one of the world's largest audiobook publishers. Prior to that, he edited cookbooks and computer manuals, and claims to have saved a major pharmaceutical company from being crippled by the Y2K bug. Brian holds a BS in English from Eastern Michigan University, from which he graduated magna cum laude in 1995. He's a retired semi-professional student, with stopovers at Wabash College (the all-male school that reputedly fired Ezra Pound from its faculty for having sex with a prostitute), Marian University (the former all-female school founded by Franciscan nuns that, if you don't count Brian's expulsion, has fired no one of consequence, and is relatively prostitute-free), and Indiana University via a high school honors course he has no recollection of ever attending.
Brian has spent most of his life in the Midwest and now lives near Indianapolis with his wife, three children, and a neurotic Husky/Border mix named Hank. He's currently working on his next project, Making Out with Blowfish, which is the sequel to Exotic Music of the Belly Dancer and the second book in a planned trilogy.
