George Orwell's 1984, a novel set in a "fictitious world gripped in the vise of constant war and a society held captive by the ever watchful gaze of a shadowy totalitarian dictator known as 'Big Brother'" has seen a large increase in sales following the NSA surveillance scandal, according to the Huffington Post.

Sales of multiple editions have gone through the roof, and the novel made its way to 5th on the Movers and Shakers lists despite having first been published on June 8,1949.

President Obama even referenced the novel last week as he defended the NSA's controversial program by saying, "you can complain about Big Brother and how this is a potential program run amok, but when you actually look at the details, then I think we've struck the right balance."

Google searches have increased along with sales of the novel since the news of the NSA's surveillance program. However, the recent anniversary of the novel's publication may also be a contributing factor to the increase in sales.
