With the support of Disney, Blue Star Families, the nation's largest chapter-based military families organization, expanded its series of Books on Bases events throughout 2013 to promote reading among military children with an event at Fort Myer outside of Washington, DC. At the event, military families received free books provided by Disney through First Book and participated in games and crafts activities. The Disney support for Books on Bases began in January with an event at Camp Pendleton, in San Diego, CA, and continued to Hawaii's Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam.
Blue Star Families created the Books on Bases program to positively impact the lives of military and veteran children through the power of reading, and to provide support and tools to military families. The books donated by Disney - totaling 30,000 - will help military parents make reading a daily activity and foster creativity in kids."We are very excited to work with Disney for such a great cause. Reading is instrumental in the lives of military and veteran children in so many ways, helping them maintain grade-level skills through frequent interstate moves, and giving kids creative outlets for stress when a parent deploys," said Blue Star Families CEO, Kathy Roth-Douquet. "We thank Disney for their generous support and look forward to helping as many military and veteran children and families as possible."Since the program's inception in 2009, Books on Bases has impacted the lives of over 150,000 military children at military installations, communities and hospitals across the United States. Throughout its history, Books on Bases has partnered with special guests, including distinguished military members, members of congress, corporate sponsors and celebrities to improve literacy skills amongst military children worldwide.Videos
