Bill Bunn Visits LA for Author Events, 7/17

Bill Bunn, the Calgary-based author of two books with Altadena independent publisher Bitingduck Press, will be visiting the LA area from Calgary July 17-19 for author events. Bunn's first title, Duck Boy, appeared on Halloween, 2012. For ages 10-14, it tells the story of a boy whose mother disappears between dimensions after an alchemical experiment gone wrong. In order to save her, he has to learn about the ancient family secret and discover the differences between alchemy and magic. Duck Boy has received a warm reception in both the US and Canada, with the author invited to present his story and writing tips at events throughout his home province.

Parents of Duck Boy fans will enjoy the second featured title, Hymns of Home (March 2013), a collection of twenty-nine essays on parenting, the environment, technology, and life. Sometimes funny, other times poignant, the essays are good to sip with a cup of hot coffee in the morning or to read aloud to the kids at night. Hymns reached #1 on Calgary's bestseller list this July and was Bitingduck Press's top seller at the LA Times Festival of Books in April.

This will be his first trip to sunny California, and Bill is looking forward to meeting his Pasadena area audience. He shares tips on writing and getting published as well as reading from his featured books. His first event is on Wednesday, July 17 at 6 pm at Webster's Fine Stationers in Altadena, only blocks from the publisher's home base.

The second reading will take place in cozy Century Books in Pasadena, July 18 at 6:30 pm. Century has long been a supporter of local authors and recently served as a venue for Pasadena-area writer's meetups, organized by Ramzi Hajj of Storiad, an on-line interactive platform for authors at all stages of their careers.

On Friday evening, July 19 at 7 pm, Bill will appear at the Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse in La Canada, CA. The owner of a print-on-demand Espresso machine, Flintridge is the local "small large bookstore." It features many local self-published and small-press authors, hosts numerous author events and readings, and caters to the JPL/Caltech crowd with a special section all on Feynman.

Both of Bunn's books will be available at all three events, and Bunn will read excerpts as well as regale the audience with anecdotes of the life of a writer and writing teacher. A professor of English at Mount Royal University, Bunn has a blog where he details every step in the creative process, from location and plotting to macro-and micro-editing. He is currently finishing the first draft of his second novel, a sea adventure for teen boys set in the rural Maritimes. Teen boys are one of the most underserved groups in literature, says Bunn, and he aims to write books that are smart, action-packed, and full of interesting facts and detailsbooks that will appeal to teen boys, their parents, and a lot of girls as well.

Founded by a group of scientists in 2012, Bitingduck Press has grown to represent over 140 books and 70 authors. The press has a special interest in fiction by and for scientists and for young adult fiction and non-fiction, with a particular love of young adult action/adventure.
