Remember when great publicity meant an appearance on television or a mention in an article in a newspaper or magazine-and when the ultimate score was to be part of a segment on the Today show Those days are long gone-this isn't your father's media world-and Mark Schaefer knows it.
Schaefer, author of the best-selling "Social Media Explained," returns with a new book destined to become another marketing and social media bible: KNOWN: The Handbook for Building and Unleashing Your Personal Brand in the Digital Age.
"In 2017, attention must be paid to "personal branding," says Schaefer. "And 'personal branding' is all about being 'known.'"
Schaefer explains that being "known" is an essential aspect of success in today's business world-and he makes a crucial distinction between being known and being "famous."
"Being 'known' is not about having millions of fans and red carpet appearances," he says. "Being known is about approaching your social media and web presence with an intent that creates the proper authority, reputation, and audience to realize your potential and achieve your goals-whatever those goals might be."
For his new book, KNOWN: The Handbook for Building and Unleashing Your Personal Brand in the Digital Age, Schaefer interviewed nearly 100 thought leaders in real estate, business, fashion, art, education, and many other fields. He found that every successful interviewee, no matter the place or business category, followed the same four steps to become known. The book comprises inspirational case studies of people who often had no job, no skills-in some cases no hope-but still found a path forward in the online world.
"It is a repeatable process," says Schaefer. "And that is the idea behind my book: to de-mystify the confusing online world and help people achieve their life's goals by following a proven path."
"Can anybody become known? Maybe," says Schaefer.
"I'm convinced that opportunity is there for everybody," he says. "Anybody can publish content and find their voice and place in the world. Will everybody do it? Can everybody sustain it? I don't know-but I am certain that everybody has the chance to do it."
KNOWN is now available through Amazon and other online retailers. There is also a KNOWN Workbook with exercises, templates, and bonus content.
