Williams spent his career inside and outside government. He worked in Gen. Douglas MacArthur's headquarters during the Second World War and at McDonnell Aircraft Corporation on the renowned first manned space capsule the Mercury. Later, he assisted analysts in the intelligence community learn how to use desktop computers for performing their daily tasks. In many of these positions, Williams received privileged information and an insider's perspective about the workings of the federal government, corporations and political organizations. While working at the McDonnell Corporation he received the nickname "Answer Man" for his problem-solving abilities.
When he retired in 1987, Williams focused on solving global human problems of the 21st century.
