Bernard Martin's new book "Following My Path: Growing Up Gay in a Christian, Fundamentalist, Right-Wing, Conservative Family During The 1940s-1960s" (published by AuthorHouse) is a memoir of his life as a gay man during a time when the term "gay" wasn't used.

"It's my story of discovering who I was sexually," Martin says. "It is also the story of how I dealt with my mother's condemnation that I would go to hell if I did not become heterosexual. It is a story that absolutely clarifies that being gay is not a choice, but that a gay person is also one of God's creations."

An excerpt from "Following My Path":

"Finally, at about the age of eight, I stood in front of a mirror and said, 'You're a queer.' Then I broke down and sobbed the way I am right now as I write this-because of the pain it caused me back then. The memory of it is still so very real today. And it was so unnecessary."

"I want straight people and younger gay people to understand what older gay people had to go through," Martin says, :Something they had no choice in. For instance, I was caught in police raids in Chicago bars."
