In his new book titled "Entitlement Nation" (published by Xlibris), Bernard Arogyaswamy talks about entitlements going beyond the pejorative sense in which the term is commonly used. The management, innovation and business expert demonstrates the positive role programs directed toward helping the less fortunate play in a country's wellbeing.

"Entitlement Nation" argues that many of today's problems such as slow economic growth, a shrinking middle class, growing inequalities, and a growing indifference to science, may in part be attributed to what the author calls an "entitlement mentality," which cuts across all segments of our society. Arogyaswamy also corrects the common misconception that "entitlement" programs are only for the poor. The book points out that there are various types of entitlements and many of them are more damaging and corrosive than the ones that are supposed to be directed to those left behind in an increasingly austere, plutocratic world.

"Taking a broader, more unconventional view of the term, I found that the entitlements of the wealthy, aided by a powerful and venal political class, far outweigh the spending on the poor," the author says. "Driven by a desire to keep the wealthy in good humor and an obsession with American exceptionalism, we ignore the findings of science, and adopt an aggressive posture economically and militarily toward the rest of the world. We have, in fact, become an Entitlement Nation."

About the Author
Bernard Arogyaswamy is a professor of management, global business, and innovation. As a first-generation immigrant, he has benefited greatly from the country's meritocratic higher education system. After completing a doctorate in business administration, Arogyaswamy has taught at a Jesuit institution for over twenty-five years. During the past three decades, he has written extensively on topics as varied as culture, innovation policy, and social entrepreneurship. He has also written two books. Though a firm believer in American economic, political, and social institutions, he is concerned over the divisiveness that has gripped our society, partly rooted in the belief that some individuals and groups are gaming the system by being perennial freeloaders. He concedes that such opportunistic manipulation is indeed occurring but that it has spread to all segments of society in matters as diverse as immigration, globalization, taxation, business, religion, and science.
