Berna King wrote her book from the point of view of people who have full eyesight, which may sound obvious, until you learn that King is blind. A twist of modern fiction, Berna King's new book "The Unexpected Gift" has a thrilling plot line but ends with a satisfyingly happy ending.

Berna King has never let the fact that she is blind hinder her abilities throughout life. With supportive parents and her faith in God, she maneuvered through light like any other child. She was a member of 4-H and spent her summers riding horses, reading and singing in several choirs. The descriptions she uses for the characters that can see are vivid and memorable.

"Some in the blindness community might ask why I did not write the whole book from the blind character's point of view or why I did not hold to any one philosophy of coping with blindness," says King. "The answer to the first is that I wanted action scenes in my book that described things in visual terms, things my blind character would not know unless she was told or unless she guessed."

"The Unexpected Gift" follows two families whose lives are torn apart by two tragic events. After one of those tragic events leaves a young girl blinded, the two families are brought together through a therapeutic equestrian center. Each family and character learns to look to God for guidance through exceptional turmoil like drug addiction, blackmail, murder and deception.

"Two years ago, I felt called to reach out to others through writing so I began to write some of the scenes from my book. I combined fictional characters and events with some of my experiences and some things I have learned from my work to come up with my story and my characters," King says.

King hopes that anyone learning to rehabilitate from a tragedy will find her book adds an element of faith to his or her lives. Drawn from some elements of her own life, the book details how people of faith cope with obstacles, tragedies and challenges in life. Ultimately, King wishes that any reader who reads "The Unexpected Gift" learns about coping with life through their faith in Christ.
