Children with special needs don't have typical reactions to the world around them, and those on the autism spectrum or who have sensory integration disorders are no exception. A new book featuring so-called "social stories" helps children with such disorders to navigate the world around them, thanks to the behavior analyst with more than 16 years of experience. She shares her perspective in the book, released by Dog Ear Publishing.
Aimed primarily at children 3 to 7 years old, "When My Senses Don't Make Sense!!!" features stories designed to help children who have sensory processing disorders or who are on the autism spectrum ways to cope with their environment. Such children may have irrational fears of environmental stimuli and misinterpret social situations. Illustrations by Dwight Nacaytuna that combine photos and bold illustrations help set the stage for each story.
The book stars a young boy who sometimes needs help relating to what is going on around him. The social stories describe situations and tell what kind of responses the boy could make. For instance, when his teacher puts her hand on his back, it feels really heavy. He learns that he should say, "I don't really like my back being touched, but thank you for being nice." Another story teaches the boy that counting quietly in his own head without talking can help him stay calm when he hears sounds that hurt his ears.
"Parsakia offers children a tool to develop greater insight into the feelings and physiological responses that can emerge in response aversive sensory experiences, as well as the language to describe these experiences to those around them," writes child psychologist Stephanie E. Meyer. She calls "When My Senses Don't Make Sense" an "important book for all parents, teachers, and child-focused professionals, as it has the potential to increase compassion and improve communication, while reducing power struggles and feelings of frustration."
