Acquiring a secluded inn on a tropical Mexican beach was a challenge to Bart Varelmann. Born in Cincinnati during the Great Depression, he served as an Air Force bomber pilot during the Korean War and later as an adman with a firm in Miami. The author recounts his adventures in a new book released by Dog Ear Publishing. Highlighted are exploits such as a search for shrun
Ken Heads, scuba diving for gold, more than a few romantic encounters, three wives, treasure hunting and more than four decades as owner and innkeeper of a that small, seaside inn he called "La Posada."
"The Innkeeper" features more than 100 photographs and other images that cover various periods of Varelmann's life. They highlight the years he owned and operated La Posada, which is nestled on a peninsular sandbar between a sleepy lagoon and the bay of Manzanillo about midway between Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta. This bright pink inn on a secluded beach boasts 23 rooms, a swimming pool and gardens wild with tropical plants.
There is action and intrigue on most every page, and affairs of the heart are intimately detailed. But a lifetime romance began as a teenager when he first saw the Pacific Ocean. It was love at first sight, and from that day forward, he was seldom far from this wavy seductress. A dive for sunken treasure off Mexico's west coast prompted his first affair with the ocean, and that led eventually to acquiring La Posada – a treasure worth far more than a mere chest of gold.
His life allowed him to have relationships with characters and celebrities such as
Lee Marvin,
Ken Kesey,
Bing Crosby and many others. One memorable encounter took place with strip club owner Jacob Rubenstein in 1953. This guy would make headlines a decade later under the name Jack Ruby.
The Innkeeper lovingly details his adopted country, its customs and especially its warm and passionate people. Although the author's big heart is challenged by an active libido, he eventually finds his match with Inga –a once-famous, German-born professional ice skater. She calls him "herr besserwisser" – mister know-it-all. The pair remain together today.
