Like most inexperienced caregivers, Tutor read several books and websites on the topic of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), its treatment and the myriad of changes the future would bring. In interviewing numerous caregivers, both professionals and family volunteers, he determined there is a general lack of answers to the many questions and struggles facing all caregivers. Most families just try to do their best without adequate warning or information.
Written for the average caregiver, so he or she may understand what is facing the AD-sufferer and the caregiver, Tutor’s book addresses the many problems and concerns he and other caregivers faced during his 20 years of caregiving experience. The many factual short stories from Tutor and other caregivers help to reinforce the difficulties involved in an uncertain, ever-changing future.
“I feel the mission I was given - to care for two Alzheimer’s patients - was given to me so I could provide them the best care possible and be their voices with the medical professionals while I could hopefully use my sense of humor to lift the spirits of my AD victims, family members, friends, and the people I have met along the way,” Tutor says. “And maybe I could also educate new caregivers and the uninformed about this disease and how affects everybody. Then maybe it is also my mission to warn the uninformed that this disease is not just the disease of their parents and grandparents. It is also the disease of spouses, siblings, and children.”
