Author Barry Ivker believes that the Holocaust, one of the darkest periods of European history, continues to raise innumerable questions to the world today. Moreover, he stresses that the prevalence of genocidal wars at present means mankind has not really learned from history. To address the evils that permeated Nazi Germany during this period, he introduces "Out of the Depths," a collection of plays that remembers the Holocaust.
"Out of the Depths" is a deep portrayal of the Holocaust and its aftermath. It is a compilation of thirteen original plays using different themes that recalls the tragic experiences of the victims, the aggressors and the survivors of this period. Ivker's work raises such controversial issues as the perpetration of evil in a sophisticated country and the risking of lives by people in order to save Jews. Further, it boldly asks why the world turned a blind eye to the persecutions and closed its doors to victims.
Although at present, the problem of human evil persists, it is Ivker's hope that "Out of the Depths" will serve to focus on some of the mentioned issues. He hopes that these plays will join countless other works written about the Holocaust-scholarly, fictional, poetic, cinematic, musical, and artistic-to help humanity confront the forces of good and evil in the world and in themselves.
Through a dramatization of this disastrous incident, Ivker encourages readers to take a moral stance in the face of evil.
