In "Basia" (published by AuthorHouse), author Barbara Marchwicki's new memoir, readers are taken on an emotional ride through one little girl's broken family life and shown that no matter the odds, happiness is just around the corner.
It wasn't easy growing up in Communist Poland during the '60s and '70s. It was even harder to do so in a broken home. Marchwicki had to deal with both as she grew up. Her parents had an incredibly unhappy relationship. Her mother lost the love of her life, her first husband, to World War II and never fully recovered from his death. Marchwicki's father, seeing this, closed himself off and eventually stopped talking to his wife. This continued for 10 years until, when Marchwicki was in her 20s, her mother passed. Her father gave her a choice: leave college and take care of him or leave him and be on her own. She chose the latter. This is when her life started, she says.
As readers watch a little girl become a woman, they are shown all of her hardships and life lessons learned. Nothing is held back as the author chronicles everything that was going on in her life and mind. "'Basia' is an emotional journey of a woman through her childhood and adolescence into a turbulent adulthood full of revelations and deceptions," says the author. Though this sounds sad, Marchwicki wants readers to have fun reading her memoir. "It took me six years to write this," she says. "I want readers to learn something and have fun reading it."
