Author Barbara Kacer's 2006 novel "Back Then" (published by AuthorHouse) is an insightful and well-researched look at wartime America. As she begins a new marketing push, she intends to present readers with a narrative that will reflect on the hardships during World War II. As the young men went off to war, the women took over their jobs. They worked in defense plants and even began to drive streetcars.
Teenager Maggie Larson finds that living during wartime presents many conflicts. Even though the battle is being fought across the ocean, people in Chicago are suffering too. There's a shortage of meat, sugar, rubber, cigarettes and gasoline, and ration stamps are needed for many items. Citizens have practice air raids, collect old newspapers, buy war bonds and plant victory gardens.
Maggie feels as if she has to grow up too quickly as the war escalates, but she has her family, friends and especially her faith to guide her.
The heart of Kacer's novel is, she feels, the way it reveals the differences between modern society and 1940s culture. "Today's moralities can be compared with the moral vibe of the 1940s," she says. "In spite of the war, these were simple times. If you grew up in the '40s, you'll remember; if not, you'll get a surprise or two. This book is for teenagers as well as for those who remember!"
