In her new novel, "Heirs of Abraham" (published by WestBow Press), Barbara Johnson Witcher blends historical and biblical fact to show how one man's actions caused the world to turn out the way it did.

Stretching over 4,000 years and encompassing the entire Middle East, "Heirs of Abraham" follows the lives of the biblical nomad Abraham and his two sons, Ishmael, born to an Egyptian slave named Hagar, who is the forefather of the Arabs, and Isaac, born to Abraham's wife, Sarah, who is the foundation of the Jewish people.

Abraham struggles with faith, power, love and cowardice, and brothers Ishmael and Isaac are pitted against one another in a battle for Israel's land that will last thousands of years. The book also focuses on the jealousy between Sarah and Hagar, who both loved Abraham and hated one another fiercely, a contentious relationship that has fanned the flames of war in their descendants for centuries.

Ultimately, "Heirs of Abraham" seeks to show how the actions of real people had a lasting effect on today's world. Witcher explains that her story helps readers "understand the real reason why there will never be peace in the Middle East due to fighting over ownership of the land of Israel."
