Barbara Gabogrecan would not be alive had she had not suffered a debilitating stroke.

As a result of the stroke, doctors discovered a life threatening brain tumor and operated early enough to save her life. However, the stroke left Barbara with a rare condition called alexia without agraphia. Due to her condition, Barbara is unable to read but has retained her ability to write. She has embraced writing as her primary expression and authored a memoir about her experiences.

In her book, Thank God I Had a Stroke, Gabogrecan shares her journey to recovery as well as the trials and tribulations she encountered along the way. She hopes to show others how to cope with a serious illness and find a pathway to a successful recovery.

"The stroke helped me to reprioritize my life," says Gabogrecan. "I concentrated on what I could do rather than what I could not do and approached my situation with an attitude of hope, passion and thankfulness for my good fortune. It made all the difference."

Thank God I Had a Stroke shows how determination, setting goals and enthusiastically meeting challenges can speed up the recovery when suffering from a life threatening illness.

"By sharing my story, others can equate to me and perhaps approach their life threatening medical problems with a greater desire to be positive and optimistic," says Gabogrecan. "I want to motivate and inspire them to face their demons and win their battles."
