In "Thank God I Had a Stroke: A Stroke and Brain Tumour Survivor's Journey of Recovery" (published by Balboa Press), Barbara Gabogrecan's new memoir, readers are given an inside look at Gabogrecan's fight for her life - a fight she approached with humor, optimism and compassion - after suffering a stroke and undergoing brain surgery.

When Gabogrecan began to experience intense pain in her head, her doctors ordered a CT scan. The results showed that she had suffered a stroke, and a brain tumor was also discovered. In "Thank God I Had a Stroke," Gabogrecan relives the emotional shock of the diagnosis, sharing with readers how she and her family coped with the trauma. She also sheds light on her relationships with fellow patients, and how they supported each other through their difficult recoveries.

An excerpt from "Thank God I Had a Stroke":

"The pain in my head was like a sudden and unbearable explosion. It felt like a knife searing its way through my skull, twisting and stabbing at the same time. It grabbed me with so much ferocity that I could do nothing but hold my head and gasp for breath. I was drowning in pain. I could not speak. I could hardly think. I am sure I moaned as the all-consuming pain persisted."

Gabogrecan hopes her story of recovery - of having lived through the suffering - shows readers that there is hope for health. "There are so many people suffering from a serious illness that they and their caretakers are struggling to cope with their ordeal," she says. "This book is meant to motivate and inspire them to better cope with their journey to recovery."
