According to HelpGuide.org pets can positively affect their owner's mood, depression, blood pressure and overall health.
Aiming to raise awareness of this type of therapy, author Kathryn Walter shares a fictional story based on true medical cases in "Babette's Pack". Following the spunky Shih Tzu Babette after she is saved from animal abuse, this heartwarming tale illustrates how a family can become a pack.
"I used my Shih Tzu Babette as the heroine of the story," Walter said. "But I plumped the pooch's innate abilities to illustrate the need of 'man's best friend' within the medical world."
Depicting the ample uses of therapy response dogs, the true story begins when Babette starts to exhibit fictionalized, remarkable skills. From predicting seizures, low blood sugar, earthquakes and promotion of happiness, "Babette's Pack" communicates the significance of canine abilities.
"I was inspired to write this book from my time as a physicians assistance and RN," Walter said. "I witnessed a dog smell out a patient's tumor, so I began researching the phenomena and felt compelled to share the information in hopes of saving more dogs lives."
With moral values encompassing the book, "Babette's Pack" relays important messages of marriage, family and spirituality that all ages of animal lovers can enjoy.
