DALLAS -
The pain of living with the diagnosis of breast cancer can be devastating, both for the patient and for her partner. A world-renowned physician describes in a new book the emotional and physical toll his wife's breast cancer had on them as a couple and shares tips on how to be a supportive partner when such a diagnosis is made. Any serious illness takes its toll on relationships, the book notes, but the unconditional support of a husband who stands by his wife's side can have a dramatic effect on the possibility of remission.
Thousands of women diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and "By Her Side: Standing By Your Partner Through Breast Cancer Therapy" provides one man's experiences with the minefield that can result from hearing that devastating news. In the book, Dr. Brian Cohen, a reproductive endocrinologist and gynecologist with decades of experience, covers every aspect of the disease from the importance of early detection and advocacy to survival tips. Although some treatments have changed in the 20 years since Rose endured two breast surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation (such as far less invasive remedies like hormonal-targeted specific therapies and advance radiation treatment, as well as genetic, medical, diagnostic and surgical advances) some patients still use the older treatments described because they are without means or access to newer therapy.
Cohen courageously bares his soul in the book, sharing his most intimate feelings, whether anger and shock about the diagnosis or joy with news of remission, in his role as supportive partner rather than physician. He is equally candid about the physical toll battling cancer took on his wife, from surgical incisions to the side effects - emotional and physical - of chemotherapy and radiation. The book provides specific tips to guide husbands in caring for their wives as well as caring for themselves during this difficult experience.
Dr. Brian Cohen, an international expert in infertility, has been a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist and reproductive endocrinologist for 45 years, rising to president of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists. He has 10 medical degrees/board certifications (three of them honorary). He continues to practice medicine in Dallas, specializing in reproductive endocrinology, menopause and gynecological problems. Cohen has shared his expertise in presentations on women's health care, infertility and reproductive endocrinology throughout the United States and the world. He and his wife, Rose, have three married children and eight grandchildren.
