Author Leatha J. Patton believes that life's challenges and struggles are inevitable regardless of the time period, and the ability to overcome remains ageless. Based on that belief, Patton's "Bridges" (published by iUniverse) highlights two families whose merging strengths create a positive outcome.

In post-Civil War Georgia, patriarch Calvin Beckford is haunted by reflections of the antebellum period. These are exacerbated by the residual effects of a devastating event that occurs on their land, causing tremendous sorrow for the entire family. In relatively modern times another horrendous incident brings more trouble for the Beckford clan. The youngest descendents, Ned and Estelle, leave Georgia. Chicago provides the backdrop for readers to become engaged in more twists and turns in this epic novel.

Estelle's daughter, Clare, falls in love and marries Grady Mayfield, welcoming into her life a new patriarch and a positive direction for both families. "Bridges" is a historical novel of tragedy, love, and resilience, inviting its readers to explore contrasting lives of both likable and unlikable characters. Hopefully, all will be remembered in this intriguing saga that ends in the 21st century.
