The latest novel in Terry Persun's Neil and Mavra Sci-Fi Adventure series, BACKYARD ALIENS, pitches the married couple against a government bent on analyzing a pair of aliens, even if the aliens die during the analysis.
After two young boys find a dinosaur egg near the housing development where they live and the specimen starts showing signs of life, the government quickly takes over with a full-force investigation. With a healthy mistrust of the local archaeologists, General Harkins calls on Mavra and Neil Altman to help in the government's investigation. Using her psychic abilities, Mavra attempts to read what's inside the egg-is it alive, dangerous, a bomb?
General Harkins doesn't believe in aliens and rejects Mavra's explanations and bring in more scientists for further analysis. While monitoring the statistics of the find, the scientists know nothing of the bio-acceleration chips inside each of a mated pair of aliens. Once the chips engage, the aliens' mental and physical growth accelerates until they hatch from their support pod (the egg). The aliens quickly excape.
With the government bent on capturing the aliens to study them, and Mavra feeling sympathetic to the aliens' plight, there ensues a push and pull relationship that eventually finds the aliens, along with Mavra and Neil, at Area 51. It looks bad for the aliens, but Mavra and Neil are now on their own mission-help the aliens escape the government facility.
