Life, death, the occult, and the horrors of persecution are explored in Alfred Mielacher's new novel "Back to Salem," a philosophical and scary journey that takes place across continents and time.

The paths of two young adults cross in the stunning landscape of the Cape Peninsula as they come to know each other and their differing lifestyles. Then an unexpected supernatural occurrence takes them "Back to Salem" to uncover a centuries-old mystery. Diane-Lynn is a highly gifted graphic designer working in Paris, and Julien is a self-proclaimed adventurer and talented caricaturist living in Cape Town. They meet under unusual circumstances as the area is buffeted by rain and gale force winds. The two discuss the meaning of life and death, their differing philosophies, their pasts, and their potential futures. After a car accident, Diane-Lynn is possessed by the spirit of the witch Bridget Bishop, who was hanged in Salem in 1692. On the day and hour of Bridget's execution 322 years prior, in 2014, Diane-Lynn returns with Julien to change historical events.

The story takes readers back to the days of witch burnings to see the ugly face of persecution committed by the church, the nightmare faced by the characters, and the threat to religious faith that these circumstances present. The author posits an intriguing "what if" scenario that moves back and forth through time and history, featuring engaging characters and the imaginative concept of altering the past.
