Author's Search for Father's Relatives Brings Healing, Forgiveness

Author Suzanne L. Holko pays a heart-warming testament to the lasting impact of a father's love in her new nonfiction "Letters from My Father: And the Healing They Brought Forth Forty Years Later in the Midst of Searching for My Ancestors" (published by Inspiring Voices).

When Holko began researching her father's family, most of whom she'd never met or even heard about, she began to make connections with newfound relatives. These relationships revealed things about her father that she'd never known - he was orphaned at age 3 and subsequently adopted, so the details of his biological family had always been a mystery.

Information from her newly discovered relatives and modern technology led Holko in search of the letters her father had written to her from that age of 14 years old, through college. Revisiting these letters in the midst of her research was a life-changing experience for the author - revealing information about her father's hopes and dreams, the details of his upbringing in Connecticut and stories about his ancestors, who came to America in the late 1800s.

Holko explains the central theme of "Letters from My Father":

"I would say it is about forgiveness, understanding, acceptance and what is truly important in a relationship. Expectation versus hope, and the freedom to accept someone for who they are in the midst of it all - through understanding the generational wounds that linger from one generation to the next. We can choose to seek healing, leaving a healthier legacy for our children, or let those wounds own us and fester, only to continue the cycle of unrest."
