There's a revolution going on in our understanding of the power of movement in all aspects of human life. A new book by two experienced movement analysts takes you far beyond the easily-mocked purveyors of "body language," demonstrating how the insights of today's trained movement analysts can increase our health, well-being and understanding of life in a world where more and more of our interactions are disembodied.
"Movement is such an unconscious, constant aspect of life that people lose awareness of its importance," said Karen Studd, co-author, with Laura Cox, of EveryBody Is a Body. This is of particular concern in today's modern technology-driven life. Connecting to and through our devices can lead to chronic disconnection from ourselves.
They write that you only have to look at how deeply embedded movement metaphors are in our language to see the power of movement, especially when describing emotions: your heart wrenches when parting with a loved one; you lose your breath when taking in a spectacular view.
"Understanding movement and keeping in touch with how your physical being moves in the world is important to experiencing life to its fullest," said co-author Cox. "Knowing something about who you are as a mover leads to greater knowledge about who you are as a person."
The authors of EveryBody is a Body connect the practical everyday experience of life to the more subtle nuanced understanding of what it means to be alive. The reader is led on a tour of all aspects of movement. There are chapters on how movement relates to language, posture, gesture, the beauty of rotation, core support and the dynamic expression of movement. The authors' aim is to help readers re-discover movement and its significance to people in all walks of life and in every human activity.
