Author Shares Personal, And Universal, Story of Lifelong Mistreatment Image Each year nearly 5 million women experience violence in their home according to the Center of Disease Control. Unfortunately, Ellen Payne was one of those individuals. Payne suffered from years of cruelty at the hands of her family. This determined author proved that a rough beginning does not determine one's ending. Payne shares a fictionalized version of the abuse that took place in her life with "Finding Joy."

"Finding Joy" paints a vivid portrayal of Joy's life, a woman born into a family that never wanted her. Her life was filled with cruelties at the hand of her family -including child sexual abuse, bullying and neglect. Yet, Joy endured and became obsessed with meeting the social expectations of a woman while also longing for acceptance.

As she embarks on her search for fulfillment, answer and love that eventually leads herself, accepts her qualities and discovers who she is. By coming to terms with her past, she finds healing, happiness and joy in the process.

"I want to encourage survivors of abuse, regardless of age or circumstance, to speak up about their situation," Payne said. "Until we acknowledge that many forms of abuse occur continuously - in homes and communities - little can be done to curb this terror. Finding Joy is my way of adding to that conversation."
