Survival of the Heart, Tragedy of the Mind is a daring autobiography and a roadmap to discovering happiness. The novel tells the life story of retired school administrator, Dwight N. Wood Sr. and his battle with depression, PTSD, a heart condition and the law. Wood believes that no matter what an individual encounters, it is possible for them to ascertain happiness and self worth.

"As humans, we are responsible for finding our purpose," says Wood. "For some this is more difficult than others and professional help may even be necessary."

Through his own experiences, Wood has discovered that it is possible to have happiness, closure and a purpose in life. He shares his personal hardships in hopes that others will identify with his struggles and be inspired as a result of reading this novel.

The autobiography begins with memories of Wood's difficult childhood, how he survived open-heart surgery as a boy and was subsequently bullied as a result of his scars. Wood's scars are not just physical, but emotional as well. He became a happy and successful high school administrator, until one morning, he was making his usual drive to work, however, this drive was anything but usual. A traffic accident occurred and he struck and killed a pedestrian. Even though he was cleared of any wrongdoing, his conscience did not grant him this same pardon.

"The sadness and guilt consumed me until I couldn't take it anymore," says Wood.

Wood developed PTSD and was forced into an early retirement. Once again, he was left searching for happiness. Survival of the Heart, Tragedy of the Mind is the story of how Wood was able to open up about difficult issues and rediscover his self worth.

Wood shares his hardships in hope that others will identify with his struggles.

"Life is a journey that is difficult but rewarding. We all must travel our own paths," says Wood. "As long as we discover happiness and have closure, it does not matter how we get there."
