Alcohol is said to be the oldest and most widely used drug in the world. In the United States alone, fifteen million people are currently affected by alcohol abuse or dependency, according to data posted in alcoholismstatistics.net. Author Shamus O used to be a part of that alarming figure. In his autobiography, The Road To Destruction Has An Exit, he takes readers beyond statistics and lends a glimpse into his more than forty-year battle against alcoholism and his eventual quest for sobriety, salvation and healing.
Shamus O was born to an affluent, influential family and had the promise of a bright and successful future. At age thirteen he had his first taste of alcohol and it was definitely not going to be his last. Over the next forty-plus years, he grew more and more dependent on alcohol, an addiction which would soon prove damaging not only to himself but to his relationships and career as well.
During his forties, Shamus O lost his businesses in advertising, catering and cars including his pilot's license and driver's license. It was also at this point that he got his first driving under the influence (DUI) charge. In his fifties he became manager and vice president of a multimillion dollar manufacturing company but his drinking had become a serious addiction, the consequences of which would soon catch up with him. At fifty-five, Shamus O found himself cuffed and shackled in a caged bus and sentenced to two years in prison with a felony 5 DUI record. His wife filed for divorce, he lost his job and his financial security through bad investments and legal fees.
In his honest and redemptive memoir, Shamus O looks back to these trying episodes in his life, giving voice to the darkness that comes in times of weakness. More importantly, he tells a story of hope and how he ultimately found redemption. Now at fifty-seven, he proudly concludes that he is sober and happy and has been blessed with the return of his family, home and dreams.
Deeply moving and triumphant, The Road To Destruction Has An Exit is both a chronicle of one man's transformative odyssey and a powerful testament of strength, hope and the human spirit. Readers will find both inspiration and enlightenment in Shamus O's rollercoaster journey towards true healing.
