KALAMAZOO, Mich., May 31, 2017 /PRNewswire/ Whether from high school or college, graduation is an exciting time for young people and their parents. But it also a time in which expectations and fears are both at unusually high levels making it difficult for the graduates to make the best possible decisions on what should come next. So says Rev. Dr. Rick Patterson, author of Shame Unmasked: Disarming the Hidden Driver Behind Our Destructive Decisions (CFC Publishing). The book was a No. 1 Amazonnew release.

According to Patterson, newly minted graduates often approach the future with fear asking themselves:

  • What will become of me?
  • What will my parents think?
  • Who am I compared to who everyone thinks I am?

He warns that fear-based thinking often leads to bad decisions and potentially a lifetime of regrets about the path not taken.

He can talk about:

  • The role shame plays in the bad decisions people make when they believe they are not smart enough or deserving enough to get what they want.
  • How to conquer feelings of shame and perfectionism to make empowered decisions.
  • Ways the need for recognition can overpower good judgment.
  • His own story of shame, anxiety, anger and overachievement and how those emotions have impacted his work and home lives.

Credentials: Rick Patterson is the author of Shame Unmasked: Disarming the Hidden Driver Behind Our Destructive Decisions. Shame Unmasked is based on his doctoral dissertation whose subject was the role shame plays in motivating and manipulating people's lives. He is an ordained minister with a doctoral degree in ministry from Western Theological Seminary. His career has alternated between working in corporate America and new church development and the ministry. In his current job, he is responsible for bringing new chemical solutions to the paper industry.
