Her desire for better prevention of child sexual abuse cases leads author Dr Samia Abul to pen her new publication, "Professionals' Perceptions of Child Sexual Abuse: A Cultural Difference" (published by Xlibris UK).

For many victims, child sexual abuse is not only physical pain but a psychological trauma that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. In this book, the author delves into the professionals' perception of child sexual abuse in relation to cultural differences. To what extent do their perception predict the abused situation? The concern about the difficulties the professionals face in identifying and reporting an abuse case may be outweighed by concerns about the right and respect of cultural differences and cultural values.

"Increasing the cross-culture awareness on child sexual abuse is not about to find a magic pill for cross-cultures differences. Also, it is not about to suggest that this culture is necessarily superior or inferior to the other culture," Dr Abul says. "Cross-culture awareness involves the learning and understanding about actions, attitudes, values, beliefs and entire ways of thinking and behaving of other cultures including a model of parenting."

A thought-provoking and enlightening read, "Professionals' Perceptions of Child Sexual Abuse: A Cultural Difference" highlights to readers that sexual abuse cases, perhaps even more than other types of maltreatment, require multidisciplinary and multi-agency collaboration in order for professionals to effectively act in the victim's and the family's best interest.
