Author Roddy Espiritu is every bit of the word survivor. He lived through the throes of war, witnessed the tide of cultural and political revolution and dealt with the transition of moving to his new country, the United States, a country seemingly a world apart from his Filipino homeland. In Tagtaginep - My Dream of Opportunity, what he calls his "swansong", he narrates the story of his life, his struggles and triumphs, and ultimately reveals a striking portrait of human resilience and fortitude.

Espiritu was born in the Philippines, in a coastal town he dubs 'South China Sea Riviera'. In his autobiography, he remembers his journey through successive phases in his life as well as national and world history. He talks about the local festivals, fiestas and his favorite Filipino recipes and takes readers on a wild ride through the streets of Manila (where he was schooled) and into the forests and sandy beaches of the Visayas and Mindanao. He also recounts sordid tales of World War II and political insurgencies and in the process lends a rare glimpse into the heart and soul of a country teetering on the brink of change.

Although author thinks that many Americans are still bigoted, he believes that a lot of changes have occurred in the attitudes, practices and mores of the younger generation, and in trying to level the playing field for job and economic opportunities for minorities.

Capturing both the personal recollection and the sweep of history, Tagtaginep - My Dream of Opportunity is a compelling true story of one man's quest to find his place in the world and a triumphant testament of resilience, courage and hope.
