Author Rob Murphy Releases KINGDOM COME

Debut author Rob Murphy's new political thriller Kingdom Come (published by AuthorHouse) is set in the near-future, when the British government must take desperate steps to preserve the United Kingdom.

Massive oil reserves have been discovered off Scotland and Wales. Ambitious and ruthless Prime Minister Robert Delgado sees the opportunity to transform the U.K. into an enterprise economy and restore its former greatness. Elections for the devolved administrations in Scotland and Wales are due shortly and the government decides to delay the announcement about the oil strike until the elections have taken place to deny nationalists the opportunity to further their cause of independence from the union.

Less than three weeks before voting takes place, news of the oil discovery is leaked. Nationalists in Scotland and Wales exploit voters' anger about being deceived. And the U.K. wakes up one Friday morning to find the historic union under threat as nationalist governments take control in Scotland and Wales.

The British government's attempts to re-assert its authority is the catalyst for violence to break out and escalate. Long-dormant grievances between England, Scotland and Wales are reawakened as a trail of death and destruction spills over national boundaries into Europe and the U.S. As the smack of firm government turns into the iron heel of repression, the British government finds its friends disappearing and enemies growing in strength and confidence. The economic bounty of the oil disappears and, once its closest ally starts to question the wisdom of its approach, the writing is on the wall.

"Over the past 40 years, there has been a reawakening of separate Scottish, Welsh and English national identities," Murphy reminds readers. "The Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics may have given a respite to the concept of 'Britishness,' but it is worth remembering that next year Scotland votes on independence. Many people fear that a 'yes' vote may precipitate the final break-up of the U.K. Furthermore, what happened in the former Soviet Union and Yugoslavia 20 years ago showed how old enmities can be revived when a multi-ethnic country breaks up."

Although Kingdom Come is fiction, Murphy believes it shows what could happen in a worst case scenario. "The presence of scarce natural resources and the promise of wealth is all that is needed to generate conflict, which has too often been proved across the world. Even an advanced and civilized country is not immune to such challenges."
