Author Releases New Memoir, THE ACCUSED

In his new book "The Accused: The Story of a Professional Practitioner Accused of Child Abuse" (published by AuthorHouse), author Richard J. Lewis takes readers through a haunting account of being falsely accused of sexually abusing a teenager.

Though completely anonymous - to protect the identities of those involved - "The Accused" is a true account of a professional youth counselor and foster parent whose former student made a historical accusation. He claimed to have been sexually abused by him 16 years prior to the accusation. The counselor and foster parent, although having suffered a spinal injury to his back, was forthwith suspended from his post in school and from the foster care team for the city. "The Accused" traces the intense psychological drama and inner turmoil of having to go through the necessary procedures of an investigation.

An excerpt from the Preface of "The Accused":

As each day and each episode of this unfolding drama is related, the reader is likely to reflect on a number of challenging issues, and possibly to be enticed to arrive at decisions surrounding safeguarding procedures more generally. It is hoped that this material will not be engaged in passively, but will become an interrogative dialogue with oneself and others from personal experience over such matters, since for this reason the book was written.

Lewis hopes to make readers aware of the perspective of a person who has been falsely accused of abuse, but he also wants to ask them to consider what repercussions might be appropriate for people who make false accusations. "I can never realistically work or offer a voluntary service again to work with young people owing to what is written on my Criminal Records Bureau document (DBS), in spite of the fact that I was not convicted, that I have no convictions or offences against children or young people, and that I was not even charged following the bogus disclosure," says Lewis. "Where is the justice?"
