Author Marlena Howerton Releases New Memoir, OUR BUTTERFLY FLIES FREE

In her touching new memoir "Our Butterfly Flies Free: The Brilliant Life Story of a Little Girl with Special Needs" (published by Inspiring Voices), author Marlena Howerton shares the inspiring journey of her daughter's journey coping with spina bifida.

Spina bifida, which literally means "split spine," is the most common permanently disabling birth defect in America. According to the Spina Bifida Association, about eight children are born each day in the United States with spina bifida or some other similar defect of the brain and spine.

"Our Butterfly Flies Free" chronicles the life of Howerton's daughter, Alyssa, who was born with spina bifida and paralyzed from the waist down. The obstacles she faces are incredible, but she remains strong and steadfast through them all, despite being confined to a wheelchair.

Alyssa was determined to live her life to the fullest. She travels, meets new people and has a positive impact on those around her throughout the pages of "Our Butterfly Flies Free." She had multiple surgeries and hospital stays, but she faced everything with optimism and the innate understanding that life is precious.

Lovingly told by Howerton, Alyssa's story chronicles the ups and downs of a life lived with special needs.

Marlena Howerton lives in Frankston, Texas, where she works as an office manager. She lives on a ranch that raises zebras. Her greatest accomplishment was being a mother to her precious daughter, Alyssa. This is her first book.
