Author James W. Burke Examines the Impact of War on Mankind in New Military Fiction, "The Weekend Warriors"

"The Weekend Warriors" by author James W. Burke Jr. examines the impact war has on the world and the men and women who serve their countries.

A work of military fiction, "The Weekend Warriors" takes place during a time of conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States, a conflict that forces the United States to mobilize reservist troops to ease tensions. These men and women, who expected to serve only support roles, must stand in battle alongside active duty counterparts to defeat the Soviet onslaught.

"I began writing my novel in the 1980s, a time when reservists had not been mobilized in large numbers since the Korean War," Burke said. "I wanted to explore the effects mobilization had on the reservists and their families."

"The Weekend Warriors" examines the attitudes toward military action and the influence war has on the people of the United States, its allies and its enemies. Burke's novel also explores both the positive and negative effects of pushing soldiers to their physical and mental limits.

"Amateurs will become professionals quickly when circumstances require that they must," Burke said. "People rise to meet the circumstances they face. Most people are never pushed to their limits. They do not know how far they can actually go."

Jim Burke served over 25 years in the Army, National Guard and Army Reserve. He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy and the Army Command and General Staff College. An amateur military historian, Burke is a Civil War re-enactor with Company K, 3rd United States Regulars.
