Author Conveys Thoughts, Feelings Through 'My Very Own Words'

Derrinique Elliott debuts in the literary field with "My Very Own Words" (published by Trafford Publishing). The book contains 15 original poems in 15 types of poetry. According to Elliott, the book was a high school project for her English class in the 12th grade. Many of the poems were inspired by life experiences or how she was feeling at a particular moment, while others are made up based on what she thought that type of poem is usually about.

"My Very Own Words" is a look at poetry at its simplest. It gives one example of 15 types of poems including a ballad, limerick, epic and ode to name a few, along with the literary elements such as imagery, metaphor, personification and many more are used in each poem. The poems span multiple topics including feelings, music and life, while showing that anyone can write a poem about anything.

"The poems reflect feelings that people can relate to. Students and budding writers can use the book as a way to practice recognizing certain literary elements in writing and types of poetry. The topics that the poems cover are broad and I think readers can find some part of themselves in them," Elliott expresses.

With this appealing collection, Elliott wants readers to see that poetry can be for everybody. She also wants them to feel the emotions woven into each poem and use them as examples to express themselves.
