Bloomington, Ind.
Author Solutions, LLC, a Penguin Random House company and the world leader in supported self-publishing, announced last week that Clifford Thompson, who self-published "Significantly Nothing" with iUniverse, has been awarded a 2013 Whiting Writers' Award. Annually, ten emerging writers of fiction, nonfiction, poetry and plays are recognized by the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation on the basis of accomplishment and promise. Each writer also receives a $50,000 prize.
Thompson's award comes just two months after Sergio de la Pava was awarded the 2013 PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for his novel, "A Naked Singularity," which he self-published with Xlibris in 2008. De la Pava received a $25,000 prize for winning the PEN/Bingham. The title was acquired in 2012 and republished in the US in 2013 by the University of Chicago Press.
"We are particularly delighted that both these authors chose to publish under Author Solutions imprints," said Andrew Phillips, Author Solutions CEO. "Having both Cliff and Sergio win these awards speaks to the important role supported self-publishing continues to play in helping emerging authors bring their works to market."
