When coauthors Robert and Sandra Crofts noticed a missing milestone, they immediately embarked on a self-funded project aimed to locate the remaining milestones in Sydney. To share the fruits of their research and discovery, they published a photographic record of historical milestones and boundary stones, titled Discovering Australia's Historical Milemarkers and Boundary Stones.

The book catalogues the remaining milestones along the five major roads out of Sydney. Eventually, the project was expanded to include the historic boundary stones of Sydney and Parramatta. Then the book was further expanded to include milestones in rural New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. These historic monuments are silent sentinels of Australia's colonial past. Having the photograph will make it easier for readers to locate and experience these monuments for themselves.

An excerpt from the Introduction:

"Pieces of our history are being lost but by considering these monuments, in the midst of our hectic lives, we can imagine the type of life the colonial settlers experienced. As well, visiting the milestones raises community awareness of the priceless value of these historic moments so that important remnants of our colonial past can be preserved for our future generations."

This book primarily appeals to families who can retrace steps to discover the milestones and boundary stones for themselves. What makes it relevant is its objective of reclaiming history. Australia's colonial history is already progressively being lost. Tracing the milestones and boundary stones allows families to consider the colonial past that is still around them.

Discovering Australia's Historical Milemarkers and Boundary Stones began as a noble project that was more like a treasure hunt, searching for historical monuments that are always present but mostly overlooked. After its publication, readers are now given the opportunity to begin their own photographic catalogue of other historical monuments so that Australia's history does not continue to slip away unnoticed.
