A young man escapes his small-town fate and moves to the modern, free-spirited city of New York in the new, coming-of-age narrative "Bird's Flight" (published by iUniverse) from author Audrey Murphy.
Protagonist Ty Partridge, known to his family and friends as Bird, feels bound by the circumstances of his upbringing. In his small Missouri hometown of Greenstone, there was only one way for a man to live and make a living - working in the coal mines.
Bird befriends Pop, the elderly owner of a local soda fountain shop, who introduces Bird to swing dancing. Bird then realizes that for his life to change, he must pursue his one true passion - dance. Against his family's wishes and local tradition, Bird decides to move to New York City with Pop's encouragement.
Bird's future in New York isn't all he thought it would be. He quickly finds himself guilt-ridden over the pain he caused his family in Missouri and tormented by a demanding stage career that threatens to destroy his marriage to his wife.
Bird's narrative reminds readers that not all dreams may be worth pursuing, Murphy says, but that happiness and success can manifest themselves in light of challenges.
