"Swimming with Sharks in Dark Water" charts Brinson's journey of surviving corporate white America, her mistakes and successes. It is based on experiences and situations that most, if not all, women of color have experienced in some form. The book aims to serve as a survival guide for women of color who wish to be successful (with ease) in corporate world. It is presented as a guide for everyday strategies and includes the unique and successful ways to maneuver, reduce and, at times, remove corporate racism.
In here, Brinson points out that being able to address the issue of racism seamlessly, calmly and with grace requires a skill set. The book provides readers with 24 rules for "swimming with sharks." These swimming with shark skills (SSS) are then supported by defining reactions to 10 common racists or "sharks" one will have to work (swim) with on a daily basis. Told from the viewpoint of someone who learned how to "swim with sharks" through trials, errors and a great deal of pain, the book walks readers through an evolution of how one woman developed successful strategies for responding to racism in the office.
With the book, the author hopes to remind readers that "it doesn't matter how many racists you meet in the office, you can still be successful."
