CLEVELAND, Oct. 2, 2018 /PRNewswire/ Last week, Arts Cleveland, formerly known as Community Partnership for Arts and Culture, released Inside the Margins: A Cleveland Literature Industry Study. The summary report shares employment and income data alongside case studies on local authors and others in the literature industry. This is the fourth report in a series of economic studies that takes an in-depth look into the various artistic disciplines in Cuyahoga County.

The summary report delivers information and context from a full economic impact study that Arts Cleveland commissioned from the Center for Economic Development at Cleveland State University's Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs. It finds that the total impact of the literature sector is 8,678 employees with $497.4 million in labor income, $1.6 billion in economic output and $163 million in tax revenue. The average wage in the literature industry in Cuyahoga County is $58,273, 11% higher than the Ohio literature industry average.

"As the principal advocate for arts and culture, we can use this data to unearth and showcase regional strengths like our writing community," says Megan Van Voorhis, president and CEO of Arts Cleveland. "We can begin to see where investments could yield a stronger sector so that arts and culture is better poised to solve social problems, grow the economy and enliven the human spirit."

The case studies throughout Inside the Margins further illustrate the depth of the literature sector, the issues it faces and its impact on the Cleveland-area. Particularly of note, the study highlights a shift in consumption of literature as online resources continue to evolve, and how this has played out locally. Writers have found new ways to distribute their work and build a strong local writing community, but some see a lack in access to literary agents and professional services.

Data from the report will inform the development of programs and policies to best address the needs of Cleveland's literature sector. Download the summary and full report at artscleveland.org/literature.
