In "All the Noise of It: Living in a Tuscan Hilltown," author Christopher H. Warren delivers an honest look at Tuscan life through colorful photographs of Sorano's abandoned areas and black and white portraits of some of its oldest inhabitants. Inspired by the work of Giacomo Leopardi, Warren uses the writer's thoughts and poems to inform many of his observations about life in Italy.
"About a century ago, the town where I live in Tuscany is speculated to have had thousands of residents - as many as 4,000," Warren said. "Nowadays, Sorano is essentially abandoned and has about 50 year-round residents. With 'All the Noise of It,' my aim was to try and bring the empty streets back to life by giving a voice to the memories and recollections of the town's eldest citizens."
Through his book, Warren highlights the profound impact living in Sorano has had on him - from learning the art of Italian cooking to winemaking, gardening, restoring a period home and sculpting ceramics. A thoughtful, anthropological documentation of the region's history and culture, "All the Noise of It" intertwines reminiscences from the town's small population with Warren's own first-hand experience becoming a true member of the community.
