The Adventurous Mailbox is an international team of artists, designers, and educators intent on inspiring kids to develop a respectful curiosity about world cultures and, in doing so, help them to prepare for their adult lives. They offer stylish packages of adventure books arriving from abroad, a dynamic and "top secret" online community, as well as lessons for homeschool or classroom use accompanying the adventure books.
Andrew Bliss was inspired to start his company after sending adventure books he wrote to his niece and nephew after many of his own adventures abroad. He explains the purpose behind his company: "The ability to understand the way other peoples think and live their lives may not be assessed on standardized tests, but it is vitally important for every kid's future. Whether it helps them in their future profession or just opens up a life of more possibilities, the more kids learn about the world the better equipped they will be for adulthood. If kids can develop the ability to learn about and truly understand world cultures, as well as to see things from entirely different perspectives, they will have a major leg up in the future with much more opportunity available to them. The Adventurous Mailbox is a great first step on this path."
The Books: The books are 40-60 pages each and are written at the 4-5th grade level. Each book is written as a letter to the reader from 12-year-old Crameye Junker introducing a featured country's culture, language, mythology, and more. All books in the series (eight books per series) are connected by overarching plots and themes. The captivating books are based on the lives of Crameye and the members of his mysterious family. Based in Taiwan, they are constantly flying out on the company jet to other countries accompanying Crameye's father as he handles matters of great importance. The books are not simply "cute" or introduce common facts about countries, but rather really help kids understand different ways that people live their lives, and to foster a respect for that.
Crameye's World: In their Adventurer Package, in addition to the books, kids will also find a personal invitation and secret code to join the online community, Crameye's World. There, kids will be able to chat with the main characters and with other kids, as well as follow the personal blogs of the main characters. Kids will also be able to practice world languages, learn a lot about world cultures, as well as play games, have fun, and even win prizes.
The Lessons: How do you help students excel on standardized tests while still being able to bring rich, inspiring material into the classroom? The Adventurous Mailbox, that's how. The Adventurous Mailbox has also developed workbooks to accompany each of the adventure books. Inspired by 21st Century Learning objectives, the workbooks also use the adventure books as a base to cover many skills outlined on the Common Core State Standards. The workbooks were professionally developed and workshopped by teachers in the US. They are written in a fun and conversational tone and use humor as an anchor throughout. They cover vocabulary, reading comprehension, academic writing, critical thinking, country-specific lessons, world cultures, projects and more.
The Adventurous Mailbox and its international team are devoted to helping kids look upon the world with respectful eyes as a great big source of adventure. With their adventure books, online community, and lessons, The Adventurous Mailbox is a comprehensive resource for parents and teachers wanting their kids to learn about the world.
